HDA or AC97
The header on mine is just labelled audio. This capability depends on the codec. Your Username or Email Address: In the AC’97 design, the audio output is always sent to the jack. It is strongly recommended that motherboard designers only use Intel HD Audio analog front panel dongles with the Intel HD Audio analog front panel header to insure that the jack detection and dynamic re-tasking capability is preserved. The motherboard can determine if the dongle is plugged in by examining the logic level on pin 4.

Intel High Definition Audio
Jan 2, at 5: Personally, switching to the HDA connector probably helped. I can’t find the Asus software either, all I have is the Asus audio centre but there is nothing there. On some motherboards it may be possible to disable the plug-in detection so they can work better though still not perfectly with an AC97 front panel.

Ax97 provides a specification for that header, but the signal assignments are different for AC’97 and HD Audio headers.
HD Audio is generally more capable.
Its not much of a big deal to me, my keyboard allows me to connect headphones and mic. Monitor Dual x Dell ms 70hz.

To put all this in perspective: Front panel audio design in conjunction with motherboard audio header design is dependant upon the type of audio CODEC being used on the motherboard. This apparently seems to be for acc97 with non standard HD audio implimentations.
However, as of [update]most audio hardware manufacturers did not implement the full specification, especially bit sampling resolution. The specification covers two types of component, and the “AC-link” digital interface between them:. On the other hand HD audio cables have a wire and terminal connecttor lurking there, waiting silently in that cold dark hole poised and ready for the time when a naive unsuspecting pin 4 who isn’t even old enough to leave his motherboard slips into the High Definition Audio clutches of that extra wire.
In AC’97, pins 2 and 4 are audio ground, but pin 4 is often disconnected.
Just to note, there’s a third kind of connector i came across, labelled azalia – which is a bundle of loose connectors. On AC97 audio to the rear audio output was looped by the front audio output and plugging in a device to the front panel audio output would electrically disconnect the rear audio output from the audio source.
